Meet the team

  • Michael Murunga

    TEER Program Manager

With a PhD from the University of Tasmania and over a decade of practical experience in program management and stakeholder engagement, Michael works with stakeholders in government, councils, industry, and the community to address complex environmental challenges.

Michael is committed to using data to advance understanding of our wetlands, waterways and rivers, and coastal and marine areas, and to help stakeholders and partners make timely and informed decision and mitigation strategies on improving water quality. Outside of work, Michael loves to explore the Tasmanian wilderness and natural wonders.

  • Sam Jack

    TEER Scientific and Technical Coordinator

Sam coordinates field work and data management for the Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program and our partners, including the on-going monitoring programs. Sam also provides input and training to our Northern Tasmanian Stormwater Working Group partners.

Sam’s background is in plant and ecological research in southern Africa, with a specific interest in ecological change, indicator species and long-term monitoring. A notable past project included coordination of an on-water river sampling expedition covering over 2,000 km across multiple countries.

  • Ruth Murphy

    TEER Program Coordinator

With a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management, specialising in aquatic ecosystems, Ruth brings to TEER a scientific foundation and international experience, including turtle research in Zanzibar and community-led reef protection in Cambodia. Her previous work with Conservation Volunteers Australia focused on waste reduction education and preventing litter from entering waterways, deepening her interest in catchment health and practical environmental solutions.

In her current role as both a Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator at NRM North and a TEER Program Coordinator, Ruth contributes to improved environmental outcomes across northern Tasmania’s farms and waterways. Through the TEER Program, she supports ongoing water-quality monitoring and biological monitoring. In her sustainable agriculture role, she coordinates the national soil monitoring program and works closely with land holders to improve soil health, productivity, and resilience.
